BIOGRAPHY: SHE ATTENDED SALEM ACADAMY IN 1804 WHEN SHE MADE A SAMPLERWITH THE INSCRIPTION "ELIZABETH STRUDWICK IS MY NAME;HEAVEN IS MYSTATION; SALEM IS MY RESTING PLACE AND CHRIST IS MY SALVATION." AFTER HER MARRIAGE, SHE SPENT SEVERAL YEARS AT HAW FIELDS, BEFORE MOVINGTO TUSCALOOSA IN ALABAMA IN 1821. HER HUSBAND STARTED AN UNSUCCESSSFUL COAL MINE AT TUSCALOOSA. HE WAS THEFIRST STEWARD OF THE UNIVERSITY, AND THEY LIVED ON THE CAMPUS IN THEGORGAS COTTAGE. 'BETSY' WAS REPORTED TO BE A VERY STRONG WILLED PERSON WHO WAS ALWAYSWILLING TO SPEAK HER MIND.
